Shannon’s April 29th Spring Auction will feature several works by leading female artists. Leading the sale are two portraits of young women by Helen Maria Turner. Turner, a New Orleans native, trained at the Art Students League of New York and later became a resident of Cragsmoor. “Portrait of Anne Spencer,” from 1925 was undoubtedly painted on Turner’s sun-filled, garden porch in the artist’ s colony. Another work by Turner, “The Italian Girl,” was likely painted in New York City.

Abastenia St. Leger Eberle’s “Girl Skipping Rope,” headlines the sculpture category. Widely exhibited at the Pan-Pacific Exhibition and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among other venues, this bronze is believed to be the only known cast of this work. Young girls were a favorite subject for Eberle and in 1909 this young, barefoot girl captured the freedoms from the prior restrictions of the Victorian era. A cast of Janet Scudder’s “Young Diana,” is also featured. Both works capture the spirit of progressive women in the early 20th century from different perspectives.

A Connecticut artist, Fidelia Bridges, is well-represented in the auction with four oil paintings. The leading works by her are Red Breasted Grosbeak in a Thicket , estimated $12,000-18,000 and Goldfinches and Thistle, estimated $10,000-15,000. Both works are from the same Connecticut collection. Bridges frequented the banks of the Housatonic River in Stratford, Connecticut where she painted the birds and wildlife along the river banks.

There are two views of Provincetown by American Impressionist Pauline Palmer including "Backstreet, Provincetown," ca. 1924, estimated at $12,000-18,000 and "Afternoon Sun," Provincetown estimated at $8,000-12,000.
Other works by women artists include a view of Greece by Jane Wilson, an interior by Marguerite S. Pearson, a nonobjective work by Hilla Rebay, and a cubist sculpture by Marg Moll.
