The Paris-born Post-Impressionist painter, Pierre Montezin, famous for his luminous landscapes along the Seine, achieved great acclaim after the First World War. Showing his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris, the Royal Academy in London, and venues throughout Europe. He was later named an officer of the Legion d'Honneur, a highly prestigious recognition in France.

His style is often categorized as Post-Impressionist, utilizing the broken brushwork and vibrant palette of his predecessors, such as Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, but with a distinct, rhythmic application of paint that added a sense of modern structure to his compositions.

This sparkling, painterly, plein-air view of the Seine at St. Mammes captures the picturesque charm of a favorite subject of the Impressionists, its sun-drenched array of houses seen across the river from an alley of poplars. The artist's celebrated lively touch and vibrant palette brilliantly animates this timeless late afternoon reverie. This view was one of Alfred Sisley's favorite subject matters and he painted it over fifty times.
  • Condition: in excellent overall condition, unlined canvas, no restoration visible under UV
