  • Notes: Luigi Lucioni was an Italian-American painter whose distinctive style, often termed "sublimated realism," garnered him considerable recognition for his precise still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. Born in Malnate, Italy, Lucioni immigrated to the United States in 1911 at the age of eleven, settling in North Bergen, New Jersey, with his family. His artistic journey began with formal training at prestigious institutions in New York City, including Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design. These early years were foundational, providing him with a strong grasp of classical techniques.
Lucioni's style was heavily influenced by the Italian Renaissance masters he studied during a trip to Italy in the 1920s. He was known for his "crispness and clarity," with "precisely drawn forms" and a smooth paint surface. A critic once noted that viewing his paintings was "like looking at the world through strong myopic lenses or with the sharpened eyes of fever."
Lucioni divided his time between a studio in New York and a farmhouse in Vermont, where he was particularly known for his landscapes of the region. In the 1930s, while many of his contemporaries embraced modernism, Lucioni remained committed to realism.
The painting "The Syrian Jug," created in 1961, exemplifies Lucioni's signature approach to still life. The artwork showcases his meticulous attention to detail and compositional balance, featuring a Syrian jug alongside a variety of natural objects. The painting was exhibited at the National Academy of Design's 137th Annual Exhibition in 1962.
