American (1853-1902) "Road Scene, Cincinnati, 1878" oil on canvas, 13 1/2 x 23 7/8, signed lower left and inscribed "Cin 78".
13 1/2 x 23 7/8
- Provenance: Private collection, Westchester, New York.
- Notes: This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's works being compiled by Dr. Lisa N. Peters and Ira Spanierman. After studying in Munich and painting with William Merritt Chase and Frank Duveneck in Venice in 1878, Twachtman returned to Cincinnati for a brief period following his father's death. This work exemplifies his Munich training with Loefftz, but as Richard Boyle writes. . ."Twachtman always exhibited an innate restraint and did not allow the Munich style to replace direct observation. Possibly one of a very few paintings created in his hometown during this period. "Road Scene, Cincinnati 1878" exhibits a broadness and depth that precedes his distinquished future.
