  • Provenance: Private Collection, Colorado
  • Notes: Jim Dine is an American artist with a diverse body of work that spans painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, poetry, and performance. Dine studied at the University of Cincinnati and Boston Museum School from 1953 to 1955, and received his BFA from Ohio University in 1957. Three years later, he enrolled in graduate study at Ohio University. In 1959, he moved to New York City, where he established a studio that he worked in for a major part of his career.

Throughout his 60+ year career, Dine experimented with several types of media, only returning to a more classical, technically refined approach in the mid-1970s. Due to his wide body of work, he is associated with multiple art movements, including Neo-Dada, Abstract and Neo-Expressionism, pop art, and more. He often featured personal totems in his artworks, including robes, tools, and hearts, as shown in this piece.

The motif of the heart is central to Dine's career and is one that he has explored in depth. He described: "I've tried to depict in these works, years of joy and pain. In painting, I would not care to 'illustrate' those emotions. I would rather keep looking very hard and see if the paint itself can do the job. Actually I know it can." (the artist, quoted in "Jim Dine: Recent Work", exh. cat., Pace Gallery, New York, 1981, n.p.).

This piece features ten stenciled hearts over a spray-painted background, creating a dreamy, hazy atmosphere, the hearts seemingly have to push through. The background is an earthy, foggy blend of greens, yellows, and whites that blends with the haze, creating a slight melancholic tone.

Dine's work has been presented in over 300 solo exhibitions and is featured in 70 prominent museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, MoMA, Guggenheim, Albertina Museum in Vienna, Folkwang Museum in Essen, Centre Pompidou, Paris, The British Museum, and Tate Britain in London.
