  • Provenance: Private Collection, New York
  • Notes: Jane Peterson was an American painter known for her vibrant and expressive works, particularly her watercolors and oil paintings. Though not exclusively tied to Cape Ann, she spent significant periods there, and the area profoundly influenced her art. Peterson's time in Cape Ann, particularly in Gloucester, Massachusetts, was during the early to mid-20th century. The region's bustling harbor, fishing f leets, and picturesque coastal landscapes provided ample inspiration for her work. She was drawn to the dynamic energy of the waterfront, capturing scenes of boats, fishermen, and the daily activities of the harbor. As in the present lot, Peterson's style during this period was characterized by bold colors, loose brushwork, and a focus on capturing the atmosphere and light of her surroundings. She often depicted the vibrant colors of the f ishing boats, the reflections on the water, and the changing moods of the sea. Her paintings from Cape Ann reflect her fascination with the interplay of light and color, as well as her appreciation for the working waterfront and the lives of those who depended on it. While she traveled extensively and painted in various locations around the world, her time in Cape Ann was a significant chapter in her artistic development. The region's unique character and artistic community contributed to her growth as an artist, and her works from this period remain some of her most celebrated.
