oil on canvas
signed lower right "Jane Peterson"
24 1/2 x 29 3/4 in. (62.2 x 75.6 cm.), Frame: 30 x 35 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. (76.2 x 90.2 x 5.7 cm.)

  • Provenance: Private Collection, New York
  • Notes: Born in Elgin, Illinois, Jane Peterson first studied art at the public school in her home town before going to New York in 1895. There, she attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1895 to 1901 and the Art Students League in Manhattan. In the first decade of the twentieth century, Peterson taught art in Elmira, New York, in Boston and at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore. In 1907, she traveled to Europe, first studying in London with Frank Brangwyn. The following year, she moved to Paris, where she rented a studio. In 1908, Peterson showed her work successfully at the Société des Artistes Français, which inspired two additional exhibitions after her return to America in 1909--one at the St. Botolph Club in Boston and the other at Knoedler Galleries in New York. She did not remain in the United States long, however, and that summer studied in Madrid with Joaquin Sorolla. Her most influential teacher, Sorolla was a prolific and popular artist, known for his brilliant, high-keyed color and vigorous brushwork. An adventurous traveler, Peterson went to Egypt and Algeria in 1910, where she painted almost ninety works that were shown later that year at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1913, Peterson returned to the United States, where she held a post as "Instructor of Watercolor" at the Art Students League in New York, until 1919. She would regularly visit Venice spending time painting the bustling, unique city. The present work depicts Campo Santa Margherita, a city square in the sestiere of Dorsoduro. It is one of Venice's most lively gathering places. Many of the buildings in the painting are still as depicted by the artist. Peterson beautifully captures the shadow and light from the bright Venetian sun and the colorful garments of the pedestrians. Peterson's work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Brooklyn Museum.
  • Condition: in very good overall condition; unlined canvas; canvas buckling; small paint loss upper right; there is a two inch square patch on the reverse (lower left), probably done by the artist as there is no corresponding inpaint on the front
