    A review of the 1927 exhbition at the Dayton Art Institute notes "…It is a tribute to the transcendent skill and insight of the late Emil Carlsen that his group of a black bottle, a copper kettle and three sprigs of garlic, backed by a profound shadow, attracted more admiration at the Wednesday opening than did any other of the 39 pieces shown…"
