Francis, Cyrus E. Dallin: Let Justice Be Done, Springville, Utah, 1928, pp. 33, 43-50, 52, illus. P.J. Broder, Bronzes of the American West, New York, 1973, pp. 94, 98, pl. 96, illus. D.B. Dearinger, Paintings and Sculpture in the Collection of the National Academy of Design, New York, 2004, p. 143.

Other Notes: From 1916-1947 the Gorham foundry was authorized to cast reductions of Dallin's monumental sculpture Appeal to the Great Spirit.. The sculpture depicts a Sioux chief praying after a defeat by the U.S. Army. This evocative sculpture captured the sympathies of many Americans troubled by the poor relationship between the United States and the Native Americans. The monumental sculpture group was exhibited at the National Sculpture Society in 1908 and awarded a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1909 before its permanent installation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

  • Condition: Canvas: Not Applicable
    Condition: Excellent/Very Good
    Restoration: Minor

    Comments:
A recent restoration included a repair of a loose Roman joint and partially broken pin on the figures right arm. The broken pin was removed and the joint was reset using a new bronze pin. Then the seam was chased and the entire piece was cleaned and waxed. (Feb. 2016)
The Roman joint of the figure's left arm was likely repaired at an earlier date.
The sculpture retains what appear to be the original reigns, intact.
