Childe Hassam, born Frederick Childe Hassam on October 17, 1859, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, was a prominent American Impressionist painter. He was known for his urban and coastal scenes, often depicting New York City and New England landscapes. Hassam played a key role in the development of American Impressionism and was a founding member of "The Ten," a group of American artists who seceded from the Society of American Artists in 1897. Hassam's early career involved working as a wood engraver and illustrator. He later studied painting in Boston and Paris, where he was exposed to French Impressionism. This experience significantly influenced his artistic style, characterized by vibrant colors, loose brushstrokes, and a focus on capturing light and atmosphere. He became famous for his "Flag Series," paintings of American flags displayed during patriotic celebrations. By 1929, Childe Hassam was an established and respected figure in the American art world. He maintained his studio in New York City and spent summers in East Hampton, Long Island, which had become a favored location for artists. Hassam's works from this period, as in the present lot, often reflected his continued interest in depicting the beauty of the American landscape and urban life. His style remained consistent with his established Impressionist approach, though his subjects and perspectives continued to evolve. He continued to exhibit his art in galleries and museums, contributing to the art scene of the time. Childe Hassam's body of work includes notable pieces like "May in the Garden" (1890). This painting exemplifies his Impressionist style, capturing a serene garden scene with vibrant colors and a focus on light. It showcases his ability to depict the beauty of everyday life and the natural environment, further solidifying his reputation as a leading American Impressionist. Hassam passed away on August 27, 1935, in East Hampton, New York, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to American art.
