ALBERT BIERSTADT
American (1830-1902)
"Fishing and Hunting Camp, Loring, Alaska" c. 1889
oil on paper laid down on canvas, unsigned.
13 1/2 x 18 7/8

Provenance: Private Collection, New York.

Other Notes: Albert Bierstadt's last trip west was made in 1889. In August of that year Bierstadt was on board the side-wheel steamer Ancon when it ran aground at Loring, Alaska. Bierstadt and the other passengers were put on shore at a local fishing camp, living in Indian huts and salmon canneries for five days until the next steamer brought them back to Vancouver. The five day stay allowed Bierstadt to make numerous sketches of the area. Bierstadt would later write to his wife Rosalie 'I was busy all the time and have 60 studies in color and two full books full of drawings of Alaska,' [Nancy Anderson and Linda Ferber, Albert Bierstadt: Art and Enterprise, exhibition cat., Brooklyn, 1991]. Fishing and Hunting Camp, Loring, Alaska is one of those studies.
